A New Costume and a Collaboration!

If you asked me what aspect of my art I love the most, collaborating with fellow creatives would be pretty high on that list. So when my friend Laurence of Only Human Photography approached me a few months ago with a concept he wanted to collaborate on, it was an easy “YES!” for me. Of course, then life got in the way and now it’s been several MONTHS since he asked! After weeks of not being able to work on the collaboration because I was moving and then more weeks of traveling for work, and then MORE WEEKS of actually [...]

I Only Share 5% of the Images I Shoot. Here’s Why:

Would you believe me if I told you I've actually shot thousands upon thousands of photos since January 1st? And yet, in the past eight months... I've only shared 80. So what's the deal?     While I am, admittedly, an addict of perfectionism, that’s not the entire reason you’ve only seen less than a tenth of what I actually shoot. The real reason I share so few images is because: I often have a very specific idea for what I want the final images to look like. But sometimes it can take a few attempts for the model and [...]

A VERY Overdue Update on Passages (I Know… Finally!)

December. That was the last time I talked about Passages here on the blog. DECEMBER. Five. Months. Ago! It definitely goes without saying that it’s time for another update! And while I don’t have a WHOLE lot to update you on (with things just now starting to wrap up with Green Rider), I do have a few items.  Like the fact that I have two images currently in the works and on the drafting table! Two! Woohoo! My working names for them are currently Differences and Thistle, although this will most likely change once I put up my usual “help [...]

So…. What’s Next?

With the add-on period having closed on Saturday, the Green Rider Book Soundtrack Kickstarter has officially closed! With $99,297 in funds raised, I find myself looking back at this project with some combination of accomplishment, surprise, and elation (and maybe also a slight sense of withdrawal). It has been an adventure getting to this milestone, for sure, but now that Kristina and I are here, we’re both going to take a HUGE vacation and go hide away in our respective hermit holes.     Juuuuuuust kidding. We’ve still got work to do, BUT activity has actually slowed down quite a [...]

New Here? Let Me Introduce Myself!

I’ve waxed eloquently MULTIPLE times (perhaps too many) about the wonderful opportunities that have come from working on the Green Rider project, one of them being the new fans that have decided to follow my work. (And no, I promise this is not another “I’m so grateful for the Green Rider post!” You’ve probably heard enough about it, so I’ll hold me tongue for AT LEAST one more week. After that, I can make no promises…) Rather, this is an introduction of sorts. I don’t ever want to be one of those reclusive artists that fans have difficulty connecting with, [...]

Challenge Accepted: Expensive Art on a Thrift Store Budget

“Heeeyyyyy Madeline! Wanna participate in a little thingy I'm doing!?! I had this idea, and I'm pretty sure it's brilliant…”   Of course, if a message starts like this, it’s definitely going to pique my interest. And if that message involves some sort of photography challenge, you better believe I’m going to say yes. Throw in the fact that said message is coming from my friend, Robert Cornelius (who is basically a photoshop god), I’m sold. No convincing necessary. Which is why, last Sunday, my roommates were trying their best to pretend it was completely normal for me to be [...]

Hi, I’m Madeline and I LOVE Nerds Rope (And 24 Other Weird Quirks)

Want to know the one thing that I really do not like? Scratch that… the one thing I actually hate?   It’s that conversation you have anytime you meet someone new. You know what I’m talking about… the one that sounds like this:   “Where are you from?” says New Acquaintance. “I’m from Arkansas. What about you?” I reply. “Oh cool! But you don’t have an accent...” New Acquaintance responds. (That, or “I’ve never met anyone from Arkansas!” … apparently us Arkansans don’t get out very much...) New Acquaintance continues. “I grew up in Bedford, Massachusetts, just outside of Boston.” [...]

I’d Like To Introduce Myself

While I was home in Arkansas, I finally did something that I’ve been very much wanting to do for quite some time: I filmed an "about me" video. This may seem like a strange thing to be wanting as badly as I did, but each time I looked at my About Me page on my Patreon, it just felt so… stationary. I wanted something that was more alive and could give you a better idea of who I am and why I create the way I do. So, while doing a shoot I had planned to do while back in [...]

Thoughts & Sketches from the Green Rider Soundtrack Artwork

Just ONE WEEK! That’s all that’s left in Kristina A Bishoff’s and my contest! (ENTER YOUR CREATIONS HERE!) Needless to say, the images I am planning for the Green Rider book soundtrack artwork have been on my mind quite a bit lately.  And given how much mind space they’ve been taking up, and how very surreal this is all beginning to feel, I thought that perhaps I needed to get my thoughts out onto the page (or the computer screen) and share with you what I am planning! The Green Rider books have been a very large presence in my [...]

Passages Update: Why I’m Probably Going Insane

Tickets have been purchased! I am flying home next month, which means that Passages will finally, after what has seemed an endless amount of preparation, begin to come to life! I’ll be shooting two, possibly three pieces, and of course, the absolutely insane part of my brain decided I wasn’t completely crazy to try this. Now, the more rational side (the side that enjoys sleeping and exercising and generally having a well balanced life) is slightly regretting that decision. I think it goes without saying that I’ve been working at an almost feverish rate to make sure I get everything [...]
